CATALUNYACAIXA SOCIAL PROJECT'S YOUNG PEOPLE AND SCIENCE PROGRAMME



Through its Social Project CatalunyaCaixa seeks to contribute to excellence in education. One of the results of this commitment is the CatalunyaCaixa Young People and Science Programme, which is designed to encourage the scientific vocation of young students who have an interest in and motivation and talent for science    
 

The programme lasts three years:
  • 1st YEAR - E2C3-Centre Natura CatalunyaCaixa
    Fifty 4th Year ESO high school students are selected to do scientific research at CatalunyaCaixa's Nature Centre where they work on one of the five projects led by front-rank researchers and spend 13 days living in an idyllic setting in the Pyrenees.

     
  • 2nd YEAR - E2C3- Research Centre. Students who have completed the first year of the science and/or technology Baccalaureate at high school can gain further scientific experience at a research centre or on an international programme



     
  • 3r ANY - E2C3-Research.
    This is the last stage of the programme, where students come up with their own projects to be done either at a local research centre or on an international science programme for which they have been accepted.
 
 
 
Estalmat Programme (Stimulation of Talent for Maths)

  • The purpose of the Estalmat Programme (the identification and stimulation of an early talent for maths) is to identify, stimulate and further enhance talent for maths of teenagers aged 14 to 15 (2nd and 3rd year of compulsory secondary education) who have displayed a special aptitude for the subject. For two years, the teenagers selected have received classes in maths on non-curricular topics, with this classes being conducted by maths teachers from different secondary education institutions and universities in Catalonia.


  • This project was started by the Real Academia de Ciencias (Royal Academy of Sciences) in 2000 and continued by FEEMCAT (Federació d'Entitats per a l'Ensenyament de les Matemàtiques de Catalunya, a federation for better instruction in maths at all levels of education) and the SCM (Societat Catalana de Matemàtiques,a maths association) in Catalonia 2003, sponsored by the Fundació Vodafone España foundation.


    Caixa Catalunya has sponsored the project since 2007.  Estalmat-Catalunya projects is co finanzed by Caixa Catalunya Social Work and receives Casio Flamagas's collaboration. Nowadays, the project receives, in addition, a subsidy of the Scientific Investigations Research Council (CSIC).


  • The 25 teenagers that are completing the project this year were selected from 250 teenagers who entered the selection process tests in May 2006, and they have had maths lessons on academic Saturdays, between 10 am and 1 pm, for two years in the Department of Mathematics of the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya.
